A maze of special architecture lying deep underground with many stratums, nooks and crannies as complex as a cobweb, the tunnels were dug with simple tools and bare hands during the French occupation in the 1940s and expanded during the Vietnam War. This gave a defensive advantage over the American soldiers as the Cu Chi people were able to continue their lives beneath the soil.
